Material

All waves can be described by their amplitude, frequency, and wavelength. This interactive waveform light sculpture, created by artist Paul Friedlander, demonstrates these fundamental wave characteristics in a visually captivating form. A 20-foot-tall oscillating rope, illuminated with colored light, creates various traveling waves when you adjust its vibration frequency. Light patterns projected on the moving rope accentuate the regular and chaotic motion, creating a work of art—a dynamic sculpture of a wave.

Descriptions & Essays

The museum is redesigning part of its exhibition space, Science Storms, a major new section , opens 18 March 2010. My work, String Waves, will be part of the new collection. Installation was completed in early December 2009. These images show how it looked at that that time. The space was still under construction. The sculpture is 26 feet tall and visitors can control it with a touch screen.
