Wie das leise Spiel an der Kinder-Krippe fügen sich Formen im Schattenspiel zu einer Geschichte. Das hat etwas Zauberhaftes, doch die Bilder brechen schnell mit der vermeintlichen Idylle. Die indische Künstlerin Nalini Malani ist mit ihrer documenta-Installation auf der "Suche nach verschwundenem Blut - In Search of Vanished Blood". Der Titel zitiert ein Gedicht des pakistanischen Dichters Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Damit will Malani auf die religiösen Unruhen in ihrer Heimat Indien aufmerksam machen. Der Bruch zwischen dem zarten Schattenspiel und der harten Kritik macht die Poesie ihrer Kunst aus. Nalini Malanis Arbeiten sind immer beides: spezifisch und universell, anklagend und versöhnlich. Im Spannungsfeld dieser Gegensatzpaare erzählt sie die brutale Geschichte ihres Landes, die auch ihre Geschichte ist. Das macht sie unaufdringlich und subtil und genau das macht ihre Arbeit in Kassel so ausdrucksstark. Malanis Standpunkt ist feministisch. In ihrer visuellen Erzählweise thematisiert sie auch die dramatische Stellung der Witwe in der indischen Gesellschaft. Mühelos bedient sie sich überlieferter Ikonografien und stellt damit nicht zuletzt kulturelle Stereotypen infrage. Sie positioniert sich klar und stark. Ihre Arbeit hat damit auch eine enorme politische Sprengkraft. "In Search of Vanished Blood" ist wohl eine der eindringlichsten Arbeiten auf der diesjährigen documenta.
