The 'Paravent' functions as a projection screen, displaying a video of a car wash routine captured from the inside of a car. The 'Paravent' shifts its normal function as a private object and becomes a window into mechanized public space.
"The paravent is a commodity that belongs to the private sphere, acting as a cover, such as the folding screen in the bedroom, which one uses to undress behind it, but at the same time this transparent screen shows what it wants to hide and therefore invites to voyeurism; there is another level to this work: the paravent serves as a projection screen, the interior view of a car wash is projected onto it, and it is transferred to another room, into a public space, into a mechanized space. But the screen belongs to private space, which creates a paradoxical situation."
- Ruth Schnell, quoting Gudrun Bielz in conversation with Dr Ingrid Adamer, published in: Trasparenz, exhibition catalogue, Feldkirch 1993
