We have a situation! is an ongoing series of live, trans-border, online-offline participatory performances addressing current cross-cultural issues.
The project began in 2013 with funding from the European Cultural Foundation for the creation of four “situations”, in France, Netherlands, UK and Austria. Each involved a 4-day workshop and a performance and discussion event, using the online platform UpStage. In each location, a current topical issue was chosen as the theme and researched; from this a performance was created, that shared stories and posed questions to creatively frame the specific situation. After each performance, the audience – both online and at physical venues – participated in a discussion that imagined creative solutions to the situation. This process engaged all of the participants in a creative and discursive exploration of topical issues.
In 2015, "Temos uma Questão!" took place in Rio de Janeiro at the Multicidade Festival, and in 2016 "We have a situation, Coventry!" was funded by the Disruptive Media Learning Lab at Coventry University, UK.
The project has been documented and a model created that can be adopted and adapted by other artists and organisations for their own “situations” (available from www.wehaveasituation.net). It has been written about in "Convergence of Contemporary Art, Visual Culture, and Global Civic Engagement", ed. Ryan Shin (published by IGI Global, 2016; ISBN 9781522516651) and in th forthcoming book "Virtual Worlds - Concepts, Application and Future Development, eds. Liz Falconer and Mari Carmen.
