What are you doing, Richmond? captures everyday people who visit Minoru Park and uses its cultural and recreational facilities – from youth to seniors – enacting routine activities. These panoramic portraits of youth synchronized swimmers, track and field athletes in training exercises, seniors playing a game of Mahjong and a workshop of wood carvers, are all unique portraits that have been purposely placed within Google Street View. For the artist, it was important to ensure seniors took centre stage in these Google Street view artworks. Their presence in the work allows seniors to occupy a public digital realm that diversifies and expands their identity within the community. The artist herself can be seen off to the periphery of the images, holding a remote device to trigger the camera shutter. Her presence acts not only as a witness to the unfolding scene, but also as a visual signature to the artworks themselves. Collectively, the photographs form an archival record and celebration of Richmond residents at their best while engaging in cultural and recreational activities.
