Which --- Side
Song sculpture for OffCentre, Newcastle City Council projects in the public realm 2006-2007.
'Which Side' is a version of the union protest song 'Which Side Are You On?'. The song is available for download as an mp3 file from the internet at www.which---side.com.
The music utilises field recordings from Newcastle's Ouseburn Valley, digital and acoustic sounds. The lyrics have been reduced to the chorus to highlight the sculptural quality and spatial meaning of the words. Retaining their political contents, the work insinuates the proletarian history of the specific location and hopes that listening to the sound activates the memory of the location's riverside.
In conjunction a sign was positioned by the Ouseburn river; and a card distributed in record shops, venues, and cinemas
