Deux pièces datant du début des années 1980, parmi les toutes premières œuvres de Maurice Benayoun, s’articulent autour de la thématique historique du Carré blanc fond blanc de Kazimir Malevitch.
L’artiste n’a alors pas encore exploité le potentiel des machines. Pourtant, la première de ces œuvres est déjà interactive puisque le spectateur est invité à l’activer en tirant sur un cordon.
Un carré blanc s’ouvre alors dans une toile peinte sur un châssis,lentement, pour en révéler un autre, en rotation. Dans le même temps, on perçoit le son d’une boîte à musique provenant de l’arrière du dispositif.
L’autre pièce, de la série Signez vous-même les œuvres des plus grands maîtres ! est non moins conceptuelle et tout aussi participative.
Il s’agit d’un kit à monter soi même pour réaliser son propre carré blanc sur fond blanc.

Two pieces from the early 1980s, among the first works by Maurice Benayoun, revolve around the theme of the historic white square on White Background by Kazimir Malevich.
